Several of Emily Carmen’s works are part of the permanent collection of Bentley College.
PAINTING AND PTSD
I grew up in an abusive and dysfunctional home. To help cope with this reality I began painting at a very young age; I would do so instead of sleeping. It was dangerous to fall asleep. My survival mode thus became painting and drawing. I began out of necessity and did not judge my work. After more than half a century I am presenting over 100 newer works in this website.
CONSTRUCTION-DECONSTRUCTION
My method of working is to create layers of imagery using mixed media. I then peel back, scratch out, deconstruct the layers, in short; I build up layers in my paintings as I have evolved as a human through absorbing layers and layers of experience. Integrating the layers of a work of art is the physical equivalent of working on peeling back layers of myself; layers of dysfunction and fear taught to me before I could speak, in order to hone myself down to a simple truth.
